A debate on fracking had to be abandoned briefly on Tuesday morning, after a heckler started yelling abuse at MLAs from the public gallery of the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Proceedings were suspended by Principal Deputy Speaker Francie Molloy until the man was removed.

A protest over the controversial method of extracting gas from rock was also held outside Stormont, with demonstrators from counties Fermanagh, Londonderry and Sligo calling for fracking to be banned in Northern Ireland.

So far licences have been issued for Central Larne - Lough Neagh Basin, Lough Allen Basin including Fermanagh, Rathlin Basin and Rathlin Island.

"The water is treated with over 500 chemicals and companies only collect half of what they call produced water - which is the water with the chemicals in it," protester Tyler McNally said.

"The process releases radioactive chemicals into the ground as well - overall, it is a really damaging process. We are looking out for the environment and the health of the people living in it."

Inside the Assembly chamber, a petition signed by thousands of people opposed to fracking was presented by the Green Party's leader Steven Agnew on behalf of the protesters.

A warning has come across the Atlantic Ocean - we should heed it.

The petition was set up by Fermanagh native Dawn Burke, who now lives in the US and claims to have seen first-hand the "devastation" that fracking can cause to human health and the natural environment.

Those opposed are calling for a moratorium to be imposed - following the lead of the state of New York, New Jersey, the North Rhine in Germany, South Africa and France.

They fear the process can cause widespread environmental damage, water pollution, death to livestock and wildlife and serious health issues for the people living in areas where fracking is used.

"This petition has been signed by members of a number of different political parties, but the vast majority have no political allegiance," Mr Agnew said.

"Instead, they have a concern for the people of Northern Ireland and its natural environment, its agriculture industry and its tourist industry - particularly in Fermanagh."

Alliance MLA Anna Lo proposed a motion calling for a moratorium and for a comprehensive, detailed environmental impact assessment.

"We need to be extremely cautious in how we progress with this type of energy extraction," she said.

"I believe it would be irresponsible not to place a moratorium on fracking - especially in light of the gaps in research abroad and, more importantly, the lack of research relating specifically to our own specific case."

SDLP leader Dr Alasdair McDonnell also expressed serious concerns.

"I believe we would be better to place investment in renewable energy generation, rather than the deeply problematic process of fracking," he added.

Bairbre de Brún, Sinn Féin MEP, recently asked: "Why in the face of difficulties with fracking elsewhere have these licenses been granted without more research being done?

"In the face of places like France, Canada and New York State refusing to allow this kind of exploration to go ahead, why are we racing to embrace this in the north of Ireland?"

The opposition to fracking also extends to the National Trust, which is the largest conservation organisation in the UK.

"The sudden commercial interest in extracting methane gas from shale deposits (or 'fracking') is worrying," a statement from the organisation read.

"Such deposits extend across substantial parts of the British Isles, and although we have not yet been approached directly for permission on our estate, there are applications anticipated or approved close to some of our properties - in Lancashire, South Wales and in Northern Ireland."
