The ambulance had left the Causeway Hospital and was making its way to the Altnagelvin Hospital when the crash happened at Dunhill Road, Macosquin at around 3.30pm on Wednesday.
Neither the patient, who was being transferred for non-life threatening treatment, or the crew received serious injuries as a result of the collision.
Another ambulance was dispatched to take the patient to Altnagelvin.
Meanwhile, one person was taken to Antrim Area Hospital suffering head injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.
Other patients were taken to the nearby Causeway Hospital for treatment.
The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said in a statement that they despatched four A&E vehicles to the scene.
The statement continued: "A passing St John ambulance stopped to assist and transported a number of patients with minor injuries to the hospital.
"NIAS would like to thank this crew for their assistance."
