Nine people have received minor injuries after a three vehicles - including an ambulance carrying a patient - collided near Coleraine, Co Londonderry.

The ambulance had left the Causeway Hospital and was making its way to the Altnagelvin Hospital when the crash happened at Dunhill Road, Macosquin at around 3.30pm on Wednesday.

Neither the patient, who was being transferred for non-life threatening treatment, or the crew received serious injuries as a result of the collision.

Another ambulance was dispatched to take the patient to Altnagelvin.

Meanwhile, one person was taken to Antrim Area Hospital suffering head injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.

Other patients were taken to the nearby Causeway Hospital for treatment.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said in a statement that they despatched four A&E vehicles to the scene.

The statement continued: "A passing St John ambulance stopped to assist and transported a number of patients with minor injuries to the hospital.

"NIAS would like to thank this crew for their assistance."

In response to Lorraine in Belfast. How do you know the ambulance was even moving at the time? The news report doesn't mention who was at fault. If you witnessed the incident may be you can enlighten us all as to what exactly happened or have you contacted the police informing them of your cast iron evidence that the ambulance driver was at fault

have you ever seen ambulances flying up and down the road , now i understand they might be in a hurry to an emergency but wen they are wreckless and just expect everyone to have heard them and move out of the way then they are very very dangerous.
