A formal announcement from Aer Lingus on speculation it will switch its operations from Belfast International Airport to George Best Belfast City Airport is expected next week.

According to reports, the Irish airline could make the move within weeks following the withdrawal of bmi baby's services, which carried 400,000 passengers a year.

Aer Lingus currently flies to Heathrow and seven European destinations - Alicante, Barcelona, Faro, Lanzarote, Las Palmas, Malaga and Tenerife - from Belfast International Airport.

The change would make George Best Airport the city's only Heathrow connection.

With the takeover of BMI by British Airways, there had been worries over the future of that route - but BA has confirmed its commitment to the service.

A spokesman for George Best Belfast City Airport said: "Following the announcement of the departure of bmibaby, we stated that we were confident that we would attract new airlines to Belfast City.

"This position has not changed and we expect to make several announcements in the coming weeks.

"We are certainly not in a position to comment on speculation regarding specific airlines at this stage."

On Thursday, Northern Ireland's aviation industry was criticised by pilots who told MPs that it was not sustainable to have two airports just 14 miles apart.

In a statement, the British Air Line Pilots' Association (BALPA) said: "The issue of air transport to and from Northern Ireland should not be left to the market alone and should be a matter of public policy.

"The policy should balance the sometime competing demands of consumer choice, efficiency, the best use of public investment in infrastructure and safety."

With 96% of pilots based in NI telling BALPA they are "concerned" about the future of air transport in the region, Belfast International Airport's Uel Hoey agreed airports in NI "aren't faring particularly well".

Aerlingus are a great airline, I've just flown back from Gran Canaria on Monday. Moving to BHD would be a silly move as the service in the airport is pretty poor compared to BFS. I think it would be a pretty bad move that would cost customers, the city airport may be central but parking is very expensive and it's too small!

Flying to Lanzarote from belfast international and parking car at that airport next week . Should I be worried that when I am away the flight will be changed to the George Best airport. There will be some disruption if all the summer flights have to be changed??

I am flying from belfast international to Lanzarote in July, will this mean my family and i will have to go to belfast city if Aer Lingus decide to move?? Or are they just operating routes to UK destinations from Belfast city?

Does this mean that Aer Lingus will be giving up their routes to the Canaries?? because of the restriction they will have on fuel due to the smaller planes/shorter run way???

I think it's a good move, the runway is plently long enough for A320's (think of Jersey, their runway is 1705m and its 1829 at Belfast-City) and nobody complains about Jersey having anything larger than Embraer aircraft. Its the 737-800 size which is slightly larger that may struggle at full load, and Ryanair has previously flown and did do well there with their 737-800's but left at least 40 empty seats. The fact is, Belfast City is much closer to Belfast and due to its size, is often a cheaper choice, what more could one want from landing closer to Belfast and saving money at the same time? Any short-haul airline with any sense would choose the City airport, its just that Easyjet has this strange favouritism of International airport and won't budge if it were more viable to do so.
