The trial of 32-year-old Avinash Treebhoowoon, and Sandip Moneea, 43 - who both denied the January 2011 killing, which happened at the luxury Legends resort where they then worked - has lasted into its eighth week.

The jury of six men and three women delivered unanimous not guilty verdicts at the Supreme Court in Port Louis on Thursday, to cheers from supporters of the two accused in the public gallery.

The deliberations had taken just over two hours.

Relatives of Michaela and John left the court as the men broke down in tears and were released.

I'm so sad about this lady. But I did not kill this lady.

Avinash Treebhoowoon

"After waiting 18 months in search of justice for Michaela, and following the endurance of seven harrowing weeks of this trial, there are no words which can describe the sense of devastation and desolation now felt," the Harte and McAreavey families said in a statement.

They added that they do not intend to make any further comment until they return home from Mauritius.

Outside the court building, those supporting the two acquitted men let off fireworks and celebrated the verdicts.

Weeping and hugging his lawyer, Moneea said: "I am so happy to be back with my family. These past 18 months have been so hard."

It had been the prosecution case that Treebhoowoon and Moneea killed Michaela when she went to the room to get some biscuits and caught them stealing.

But, by their verdicts, the jury rejected that case.

Treebhoowoon had confessed to the murder during police questioning in the days after Michaela's body was found, but he later insisted he had only done so under torture by the officers holding him.

Meanwhile, a phone call made by Moneea on 10 January 2011, just after 2.45pm - the time Michaela is said to have been killed - was key evidence presented by his defence and accepted by the jury as proof of innocence.

The young bride - the only daughter of Tyrone GAA boss Mickey Harte - was aged just 27 when her new husband found her strangled in their hotel room.

The trial has been one of the longest of its kind in Mauritian history and defence lawyer Rayma Valayden has now called for the police investigation into Michaela's killing to be reopened immediately.

"My message to the McAreavey family is don't despair - we will find for you guilty persons," he said.

I agree with Dave in Omagh - he is quite correct. These two men were tried in a court with the flimsiest of evidence offered by the prosecution and to convict on the evidence submitted would have most definitely been an injustice. Yes I feel that the police and court system is Mauritius has failed abysmally and needs to improve but when we travel abroad we can't always expect the countries we visit to have the same legal standards as our own. This was a shocking murder but then again all murder is shocking regardless of whoever loses their life - whether they be famous or unknown. I truly hope that whoever commited this crime is caught, tried fairly and punished. One of the difficulties is that holiday resorts have a transient population and its possible those who are possible suspects have long fled the jurisdiction of Mauritius.

David, how do you make out justice has been done, no one has been convicted because of the shambles the police made. Anyhow hopefully with all the prayers by everyone justice will one day be given to this beautiful and respected lady. If it was your sister or niece I have no doubt you would say justice was not done.

These men have been found not guilty through the courts so justice has been done.

Amanda Im not getting into any argument or debate but I had to make my comment as a lot of my friends and people who live near me thought your comment most insensitive. Im sorry about your friend being murdered and cannot understand why it didnt make the headlines, but even though these two men were found not guilty, the evidence against them and the evidence they gave in court just does not add up, times on the keypad at the rooms and times they say they were inthe room differ, also not a mark on their bodies from supposedly police brutality, I have read the evidence every day from the trial first started and I like many other people here in northern ireland fail to understand why they were not convicted . The McAreavy and Harte families have been left devastated and desolate at the outcome, but hopefully one day justice will prevail. This girl was married just ten days and should have had her whole married life ahead of her, just like your friend. It doesnt matter where the murder took place, it doesnt make it any different. Murder is murder and why should it not make the headlines. The families dont want any scapegoat, they want no innocent person sent to prison, they have said this.

Eileen i wasn't referring to just this one island, the carribean has had this kind of thing happen to tourists before and not that long ago one of my teachers from school was murdered abroad and it doesn't fill the news. And if it was a family member of mine iwould want the real guilty party behind bars not just any scapegoat.
