A teenager was shot in the legs in west Belfast
A teenager has been abducted and shot in a paramilitary style attack in west Belfast.

The 18-year-old was abducted by a gang of four masked men at La Salle Drive on the Falls Road shortly before 10pm.

Police said he was forced into an old silver 406 Peugeot estate car and driven a short distance away to the Corrib Avenue area.

He was taken out of the vehicle and shot twice, once in each leg.

He was taken to hospital for treatment but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

An SDLP councillor for the area has condemned the shooting.

"This is a totally despicable act," Tim Attwood said. "It was wrong when the IRA was carrying these attacks out and nothing has changed now.

"The west Belfast community endorses the rule of law and those who take the law into their own hands and act as judge, jury and executioner have no support from the rest of the community."

Alliance MLA Anna Lo has expressed her disgust at those behind the attack.

"I am sickened that such a horrendous attack was carried out. This was a callous and brutal crime that was carried out by a bunch of thugs that nobody wants on our streets."

The thing is what some of you people are supporting was not for the benefit of ur community but to show who is boss. If that was a family member belonging to you, you would be outraged and rightly so because no human being deserves shot for being a nuisance 999 is there for a reason use it. And keep using it until something is done.

These kind of incidents always leave me feeling torn in two. On the one side we have criminals destroying their communities with virtual impunity, due to an emasculated and over-scrutinised police force, a flaccid and defendant-centric justice system and no political will to conclusively deal with criminals (rehabilitation is a myth to reassure the public) who refuse to conform to societies norms. We have people exasperated, frustrated and at their wits end with criminality in their area because the justice system does not deliver. So yes, I have little sympathy when one of these career criminals gets shot or beaten and understand why there is support (even tacit, if not active) for punishment attacks. However on the other side, we have a different bunch of shady individuals, who see the weakness of our justice system as an opportunity to further their own ends. To use punishment beatings as the "shortcut" to justice and even community support. Like ever "quick-fix" I believe there is a snag and these individuals have their own agenda, rather than doing all this for the good of society. They have no oversight and no moral authority. They are often just running protection rackets. Perhaps a more robust criminal justice system could take away support for "vigilante" justice?

big conor and james ; shame on you two for your comments , who do these criminals think they are shooting children ? as for supporting them your no better than those who got shot , they might be a plague on your area but supporting armed criminal republican gangs out shooting civilians is no better , hang your heads in shame .

The police themselves will tell you they can only get them to court (If they have the evidence) Look at the Rioters, how many do you think will get let off. From the sounds of it the IBA are looking over thier shoulders from the Sandy Row lot, the Police and the men with no faces who they are writing things about on local businesses. Worse of 2 evils!!!
