Men dressed in combat gear shot a volley of bullets over the tricolour-draped coffin of murdered Real IRA leader Alan Ryan on Saturday.

A major search operation involving 200 gardaí officers was launched on Thursday morning into dissident republican activity linked to the apparent show of strength.

Sixteen men, one woman and a teen boy have been arrested during raids which have been taking place across counties Dublin, Meath and Kildare.

The persons arrested range in age from late teens to 60 years of age.

Gardaí also seized three imitation firearms, mobile phones, computers along with documentation.

Alan Ryan, who was 32, was shot dead in broad daylight by a gunman in the grounds of an apartment complex in Clongriffin on 3 September.

He was head of a Real IRA faction in Dublin and had been linked to extortion rackets.

Concerns had been raised after men opened fire over his coffin, despite up to 100 gardaí being drafted in for the service in Donaghmede.

Mourners attempted to shield the gunmen from onlooking gardaí and cameras as they changed out of combat gear and masks in a van at a house.

Those arrested on Thursday have been detained under section 30 of the Offences against the State Act 1939.

The investigation is ongoing.

All this because they attended a funeral?

CM, are you seriously suggesting that there is nothing wrong with being a member of an illegal terrorist organisation, appearing in paramilitary style uniform at the funeral of a fellow terrorist who was assassinated by rival gangsters, taking part in a paramilitary/ terrorist procession/ show of strength then finishing off by firing illegally held firearms in public,.... seriously? An open and democratic society can not allow the toxic presence of secret illegal armies, answerable only to crime lords and terrorists. Such organisations undermine the states sovereignty, democracy, liberty, law and order. There is only one lawful army in the Republic of Ireland, that is the Irish Defence Forces. These gangsters should be consigned to jail or the history books, either will do.

I can't believe I'm actually seeing more respect for our fallen volunteers from a *loyalist* than the rest of you lot. Thank you, CM. anyway, the volley of shots over the coffin is a longstanding Republican tradition and it was fully fitting for Alan to be laid to rest with that dignity and honour. It wasn't wrong in the 70s and it's not wrong now. As for it not happening in the north because of PSF that's just absurd. They are no more a Republican party than the DUP and they certainly don't speak for any self-respecting Republican as we know they have long sold out our cause. Alan Ryan was a fearless and committed Republican & activist and the truth of that will come out in the weeks ahead. I am proud to call him a comrade.

The gunmen were just showing their respect, nothing wrong with that. They werent hurting anyone and didnt intend to offend/hurt anyone. I dont see any problems with it to be honest. I am a loyalist and I would expect shows of respect to be done at any high level figures in my community without resulting in arrests.
