A teenage 'R' driver, who seriously injured his back seat passenger in a head-on crash into a tree at 100mph, has been handed a two-year custodial sentence.

Logan Tang, 19 and from Newtownabbey, will serve a year in the Young Offenders' Centre and a year on licence over what the judge branded "foolhardy, highly dangerous" driving.

Judge Tom Burgess told Belfast Crown Court that Tang and his two passengers were "incredibly fortunate" to have even survived the impact of the crash on the A8 carriageway on July 1 2009.

Earlier, the court had heard how Tang - driving a brand new Toyota Yaris just three months after passing his driving test - collected his two female passengers on the day in question and drove down the carriageway at speeds of up to 100mph.

Despite slowing down at the request of his passengers, Tang again accelerated to those speeds after going round the roundabout at Ballynure and heading back down the A8 - where he lost control, veered across the carriageway and ploughed into a tree.

A prosecution lawyer explained that Tang's front seat passenger suffered cuts, bruises and whiplash-type injuries, but that the back seat passenger sustained a fractured cheekbone and whiplash injuries to her neck and shoulder.

Tang admitted at the scene that the crash had been his fault and later pleaded guilty to a charge of causing grievous bodily injury by dangerous driving.

In sentencing the young driver, Judge Burgess warned that "anyone minded to embark on driving like this will, apart from in the most exceptional cases, face custody".

As well as the custodial term, Tang was banned from driving for two years.

Andy, it was an example.. i could list every car name under the sun, but it was to make a point that those wealthy, mature and more experienced drivers who have flashy cars such as the 2 i mentioned are also bad drivers at times, im guessing my comment hit a nerve, and would bet you speed, tailgate and use the phone eh? i work 40 hours a week and have my own car, im no DLA claimer, although i would probably be better off if i was..

@ JIM , Why single out Mercedes & BMW drivers ? I've seen drivers of many other car manufacturers doing 70mph+ on motorways whilst on the phone. Maybe you're jealous of Mercedes & BMW drivers , whilst in your DLA car .

In very recent years the overall standard of driving has plummeted dramatically. Just the other day I was nearly killed by a man in a massive 4x4 Merc who thought the left lane was the place to be for turning right at a roundabout - scared the daylights out of me. - When i blasted the horn I was the one that got the abuse. I experience similar things each and every day on the road and it is only getting worse. When will people realise driving is a proper dangerous thing and need to know their oats ! ALSO - the outside lane is for overtaking OR if you happen to be turning right - not dawdling along at a leisurly place on motorway or if you need to turn right at some stage in the future- USE THE RIGHT HAND LANE PEOPLE

It used to be the young drivers who had passed their test were the worst on out roads. But i have noticed over recent years that their driving standards have improved .Probably more to do with the high insurance they have to pay and the need to keep a clean licence. In general N.I. drivers are good but a small percentage still cut other drivers up,speed and worst of all are constantly using their mobile phones.Adverts dont seem to have any effect.Maybe double the penalty points might make them finally see sense.

william leckey, i suppose the older more experience drivers in their flashy BMW's and Merc's dont fly down roads at 80+mph and on the phone? i see more mature drivers speeding / tailgating me and talking on the phone that younger ones these days.. inexperience and stupidity hits newer drivers, complacency and stupidity hits the more experienced..
