Indian-owned firm Firstsource is creating the new positions at their existing office in the city.

The company already employ more than 1,000 people there, and a further 800 in Belfast.

Derry has among the highest unemployment rate in Northern Ireland and earlier this week it was revealed that more people are out of work in NI than in the rest of the UK.

This is welcome news at a time when there's not a lot of good news," said Foyle MP Mark Durkan.

"In the current climate jobs are jobs. They're paying wages so that people can bring that home to their families.

"It's a credit to the company and to the local workforce. This is additional work that has been won in the city won the back of the existing workforce," he added.

Whilst any new jobs are to be welcomed in the current climate...why oh why are there yet more call centre jobs, which can so easily be transferred elsewhere at the flick of a switch. Is there ANY chance of Arlene Foster &her team and Invest NI getting or at the least, securing manufacturing and skilled or semi skilled jobs.
