A suspect vehicle sparked the alert in St Mary's Gardens in the Beechmount area in Thursday night

Army bomb experts have been sent to the scene to examine the vehicle and the area has been cordoned off.

A nearby community centre has been opened for residents forced from their homes.

West Belfast SDLP MLA Alex Attwood has said that the latest alert must be condemned outright.

He said: "Again it is the citizens of west Belfast who have been put out of their homes and children have been put out of their beds.

"Those behind this security alert must be condemned outright.

"Anyone with any information must contact the PSNI.

"Irish democrats must continue to stand together against the threat of terror.

"Irish democracy prevailed before and it will do so again."
