Police and army bomb experts examined the scene following reports of a loud bangs outside two properties in the early hours of Saturday.

A pipe bomb type device was believed to have been thrown at a house in the Lapwing Way area shortly after 1.35am.

Four adults and a child were inside at the time but were not injured.

At around the same time another reported pipe bomb type device also exploded outside a house in the Lincoln Court area.

Damage was caused to the front door of the property and four adults who were in the house at the time were not injured.

"Police are linking these incidents and are treating them as hate crimes," a PSNI spokesperson said.

Remains of the devices have been taken away for forensic examination.

SDLP MLA for Foyle Pat Ramsey condemned the incidents and appealed for anyone with information to contact police.

"It appears that this appalling attack on homes in Derry was racially motivated, this is a very disturbing development," he said.

"My thoughts are with the families who have been targeted and endured such a terrifying experience during this unacceptable attack."

Anyone with information about the incidents or who saw anything suspicious in the area at the time of the attacks is asked to contact police at Strand Road station.

Remember in 2006 a Polish family living in the fountain estate in derry had the belongings of their house put on the local bonfire? The people that carry out these attacks are animals, they can live beside no-one but their own bigoted kind. It is they who deserve to be ousted from the community, not foreigners.
