The First Citizen was first across the line at City Hall on Friday afternoon, finishing one vote ahead of the SDLP's Claire Hanna who has also been elected.

Mr Ó Muilleoir said: "I'm very pleased, thrilled, over the moon. We fought a hard campaign in Balmoral and the response across the citizens I thought was grateful for the services we give.

"I'm very privileged to serve the people of Balmoral and I look forward to getting stuck in on their behalf."

PUP leader Billy Hutchinson topped the poll for the Court district.

Sinn Féin also led the way in Black Mountain where Steven Corr and Janice Austin were elected, and in Castle with Mary Ellen Campbell.

Alliance topped the poll in the Lisnasharragh district of east Belfast with Michael Long, who is Naomi Long's husband, ahead of Aileen Graham of the DUP.

Couldnt agree more with nonbigot. As first citizen he was extremely visible in his approach to integration and outreach which is to be applauded. His demeanour and personality makes him a serious candidate and unionists who had the courage to recognise and exercise their vote accordingly are also to be applauded.
