The singer, who found fame by winning Britain's American Idol forerunner Pop Idol in 2002, was close to signing a contract to join the panel of the UK version of the TV talent show ahead of its debut in March.
However, the deal fell through and the job was given to The Script star Danny O'Donoghue, and Young admits he was devastated by the snub.
He tells the Daily Express: "I don't think I have ever been treated like that - been led on so long for a job and then had it taken away, or ever been so weirdly upset about it. It was a great reminder that this business is a cruel one."
