The guitarist's mum Gwenda, who was in her late 70s, passed away on Monday after a short battle with illness.

The Edge, real name David Evans, and his family paid their respects to Gwenda at a mass service in Malahide, Dublin on Saturday, and they were joined by U2 stars Bono, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen.

The mourners then remembered Gwenda at a quiet reception at The Grand Hotel.

The Edge's mother acted as a roadie for the group in the early days of the band, with Bono once declaring: "Mrs Edge was always there. She had an orange Volkswagen, she picked up our gear and she never complained."
