Sharon Stone broke down in tears as she accepted a lifetime achievement prize from Martin Scorsese on Monday.

Stone's tears over lifetime honour

The veteran star became emotional as her Casino director presented her with the trophy at the 11th Annual AARP Magazine Movies for Grownups Awards in Beverly Hills.

Fighting back tears, Stone told reporters: "I must've died and gone to heaven. I've gotten a lifetime achievement award from Martin Scorsese!

"I am so grateful for this day. I'm grateful I'm here in this moment. I'm grateful I'm here, because it wasn't always a sure thing."

Other big winners at the star-studded event included Glenn Close, who was named Best Actress for her turn in Albert Nobbs, and filmmaker Alexander Payne, who received the Chaise d'Or trophy for The Descendants.

Woody Allen's sister Letty Aronson, who has produced the director's films for nearly 20 years, was on hand to accept the Best Screenwriter accolade for Midnight In Paris on her brother's behalf.
