Jude Law described director Guy Ritchie as like a father to two wayward sons as he attended the world premiere of Sherlock Holmes, in which he stars alongside Robert Downey Jr.

Old-fashioned lamps and smog helped to recreate the atmosphere of Victorian London at the event in Leicester Square attended by stars including Heather Graham and Gwen Stefani.

Downey Jr plays the super sleuth while Law takes on the role of his ally Dr John Watson.

Law said of his relationship with Downey Jr: "The flirting started the minute we met. It was based on mutual respect and admiration."

He described the atmosphere as a "happy set", saying of Ritchie: "He was the father to the two wayward sons."

Ritchie described those he had worked with as "good guys". He said he knew the stories of Holmes's adventures from childhood.

He said: "I had an idea of how he should be represented and from what I understand it's not quite how he's been previously represented."

Asked about the possibility of sequels, Ritchie said he would "have to see how well this one does".

He said of the part of Holmes: "I can't think of anyone more appropriate than Robert Downey Jr."

The movie includes scenes shot at St Paul's Cathedral, the Houses of Parliament and Liverpool Docks.

The action adventure opens across the UK on Boxing Day.
