In Masters of Sex Sheen portrays Dr William Masters who, in the 1950s, undertook a controversial study into human response to sex.
Speaking to This Morning's Phillip and Holly about his new role, Sheen said: "I get a lot of texts from my friends saying "I made the mistake of watching this with my parents!"
Masters of Sex has become a huge hit in the US and has recently been commissioned for a second series.
Sheen explained the character he portrays is a very complex man who was embarking on a hugely controversial subject matter.
He said: "He was a OB GYN surgeon; he was at the top of his field and he was a fertility expert as well, one of the best in the country, but his whole life he wanted to do this incredibly controversial study.
"No one had really done a study about what happens in the body during sex, there was no information about it at all and he knew it was going to be a big problem in terms of how people would react to it.
"He was accused of (producing) smut and pornography."
And Sheen believes his new programme manages to convey the unusual life and works of his character.
"What is interesting in the drama, I think, is his motivations are very complicated, he is a very closed off character and it's very difficult to read him.
"And slowly as the story unveils certain layers (of him) you can start to get a sense of maybe what is going on with him."
