The dome at City Hall will be lit up as a flashing red beacon on Christmas Eve to make sure Santa has no problem finding Belfast.

Councillors said the building will be illuminated for five minutes every hour, on the hour, to help guide Santa and his reindeer into the city as they make their deliveries.

It has also been revealed that the iconic dome will ring in the New Year with a countdown in lights before being lit up in rainbow colours for the first 10 minutes of 2014.

The colourful displays make use of a state-of-the-art floodlighting system which was installed at City Hall earlier this year, and allows it to become washed in a variety of colours to mark particular events throughout the year, as well as for charity events.

It's the same technology that is used on the iconic Empire State Building in New York.
