"There was a point in my career where I had given up on songwriting, because I didn't think I had anything to say and because I was getting lazy," he explained.

"But then one of the guys came round with an acoustic guitar one Sunday afternoon, he started strumming and I started singing...and we just took off from there.

"I realised I had a lot to write about."

The rock superstar has now released his new album in which he has written nearly all of the tracks.

He has also written his autobiography and revealed there were a lot of issues about himself that he felt he needed to address.

"There are a lot of things I had to straighten out about football, grave digging, sex, drugs, everything," he said.

"You want to get the truths sorted out and this was the opportunity, plus they paid me a fair sum."
