Robin Gibb's family began the process for the star to receive a knighthood last year as they knew the singer was "on borrowed time" and wanted him to land the honour before he died.

Robin Gibb 'considered' for knighthood

The Bee Gees legend, who passed away on 20 May, received a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) from Queen Elizabeth II in 2004 along with his bandmate brothers Barry and Maurice, but his relatives wanted him to be made a 'Sir'.

They filled in the official paperwork in 2011 while he was battling cancer, and Gibb's cousin Hazel believes he would have been bestowed with a knighthood in the upcoming 2012 Birthday Honours list, which is published in June.

She tells Australia's 4BC radio: "I put in the official nomination papers in about October last year and someone started a campaign on Facebook and a petition... We knew Robin was on borrowed time and I said: 'Look, I know it takes 12 to 18 months, but we don't have this time... Time is not a luxury we can afford... It was being seriously considered by the government... We actually think he probably would have received a knighthood in (the Queen's) Birthday Honours List, but they don't do them posthumously at the moment."

However, the Gibb family is still hoping to secure a knighthood for Barry, the final surviving member of the Bee Gees.

Hazel adds: "That is now our campaign, to get Barry one."

I think Robin deserves it more than Barry. Robin did more than Barry. I think they should all get one, that's what I say.

It would be nice (to be nice) and perhaps display a picture of Robin in his prime?
