Robbie Williams, The Clash's Mick Jones, and Melanie Chisholm are among the stars teaming up to record a charity single to benefit the victims of Britain's worst ever sporting disaster.

Beverley Knight and Paloma Faith will also lend their voices to a new cover of the Hollies' classic He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother, to be produced by acclaimed songwriter Guy Chambers.

Money raised will go towards those affected by the 1989 Hillsborough Disaster, when 96 football fans died in a horrific crush at a sports ground in Sheffield, England.

Chambers says: "I am deeply honoured to be asked to produce this record for the 96... I just listened to it and I thought I certainly couldn't write a better song than that."

The new version will be released in December, and Chambers admits there is one last star he would like to join the cause.

He adds: "I'm very happy with the artists we have already, but obviously I know Sir Paul McCartney was mentioned so if he did join our happy little band of talent then that would be amazing."

The victims' families are calling for a new inquest into the disaster after an inquiry earlier this year revealed the police department in charge at the sports ground during the horror launched a cover-up to try to shift blame onto the fans.
