The Young Ones star died at his London home earlier this week.

Once cause of death is established an inquest may be scheduled at a later date.

On Wednesday Mayall's wife Barbara Robbin told reporters said she had no idea what caused her 56-year-old husband's death.

"We don't know yet what happened," she said. "He had a strong heart, so I don't think it was a heart attack. But we just don't know until the coroner's report.

"Maybe he had a fit, maybe it was his heart. We just don't know."

Police said the comedian's death is not believed to be suspicious.

Mayall's Comic Strip Presents colleague Peter Richardson told BBC Radio 4's Today Programme, the comedian and actor was happy and healthy in the hours before his death.

He said his son was one of the last people to see him alive.

Richardson, who directed Mayall in a series of TV shows, explained his son saw him around half an hour before he died at his London home.

He said: "He was happily chatting away and it was very quick and we still don't quite know what happened but it was a seizure of some sort."
