As Emmerdale prepares to celebrate 40 years of drama in the Dales, the popular soap has undertaken one of its biggest challenges to date by staging its very own music festival.

When it comes to Emmerdale, mud and wellies have never been too hard to find - but the Proclaimers playing at Home Farm? Well, that's definitely new!

"It was really different from anything we had done before," Craig and Charlie Reid of the Proclaimers said, on enjoying filming with the cast and crew.

"We had a really excellent day filming with Emmerdale - everything went very smoothly."

Scouting for Girls felt it was only right they join in the action at HomeFields 2012, seeing as they had already performed at the Woolpack in 2010.

"We felt the next step as Emmerdale fans was to appear in the show ... and finally now our dreams have come true!" the band said.

In the show, Home Farm owner Declan Macey and his sister Megan have been working long and hard to bring the festival plans to life. And behind the scenes, the Emmerdale cast and crew have been working just as hard.

While the show's bosses had considered actually staging a real festival, in the end they had to settle for recruiting hundreds of extras to act as the gig-goers.

As well as the main acts, they also roped in local bands DeLorean Drivers and Eureka Machines and folk singer Brendan Croker.

"This festival represents the modern countryside: vibrant, young and energetic. It was an amazing feat to put together an entire festival in such a short space of time," series producer Stuart Blackburn said.

"Technically, it is probably one of the biggest challenges we have ever had on the show.

"But the end result looks great."
