The new film features footage of the pop superstar trying to keep her marriage on track as she tours the world on her ambitious 2011 Teenage Dream trek, and includes tender moments backstage before concerts when Perry appears to be overwhelmed with her personal problems.
But she wanted fans to see her stripped bare in the film and she insisted on keeping footage of her crying, battling with Brand and breaking down in the movie, which debuts next month.
But she insists there was a lot of drama surrounding her marriage she opted not to show, explaining: "I didn't get too detailed about the specifics because I believe that that's only supposed to be between the two people that are in it, but I just wanted to encourage people to let them know that it's OK if they have problems, it's OK if they're going through a situation, they don't have to lay down and die. They can get through it."
And she urges fans to follow her example and let God take care of those who do harm to others.
She tells news show Access Hollywood: "I'm very aware of karma and I think the universe has its way with people and their actions."
Asked why she didn't simply veto all talk and footage of her crumbling marriage, Perry tells The Hollywood Reporter: "Honesty has always worked for me."
