The I Kissed A Girl hitmaker sparked speculation of a new relationship with the rocker after they were spotted enjoying several dates in Los Angeles last month.
The rumours were fuelled by Perry's previous admission that she had a crush on the musician.
However, Perry and Mayer, who never confirmed the reports, have called it quits before the romance really got off the ground, according to Us Weekly.
A source tells the American magazine: “She’s really upset about it. She is making it seem like it wasn’t serious with John, but she is hurt.”
Mayer has dated a string of stars, including Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Aniston and Taylor Swift, while Perry recently dated Florence + the Machine guitarist Robert Ackroyd following her divorce from ex-husband Russell Brand.
