The Star Trek icon, who has been married to three women over the years, hit headlines on Monday when a writer for The Guardian described him as gay in an article about actress Ellen Page, who 'came out' over the weekend.

The original article read: "Some gay people, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, think Page's coming out speech is newsworthy," and editors at the publication - which frequently campaigns to improve press standards - have since issued a correction.

Stewart has now spoken out about the incident and laughed it off in a series of humorous posts on his Twitter page.

He writes: "But @guardian I have, like, five or even SEVEN hetero friends and we totally drink beer and eat lots of chicken wings!"

Adding: "Well, @guardian it makes for a nice change... at least I didn't wake up to the internet telling me I was dead again."
