The What Makes You Beautiful hitmakers opened the first night of the trek with their song Midnight Memories at the 40,000 capacity El Campin Stadium in Bogota, Colombia.
While their 23-song set impressed the fans, their on-stage behaviour garnered the most attention, with Niall Horan grabbing his crotch during a dance routine and Louis Tomlinson dashing off-stage during the show to use the bathroom, while Harry Styles forgot his solo part during their track One Thing.
However, many fans around the world were disappointed to discover that the live stream of the concert on the web crashed so they could not watch the action online.
The bandmembers were overwhelmed by the crowd's reaction and took to Twitter after the show to thank them.
Liam Payne called it: "The greatest experience of my life" and Horan wrote: "Bogota! That was incredible! Thank you so much! loved every second of it."
Styles added: "Columbia (sic), thank you so much. You were the perfect way to start a tour. It's been a while and you were incredible. Love."
The stadium tour will conclude in Miami, Florida on 5 October and includes dates at Dublin's Croke Park this summer.
