U.S. President Barack Obama showed off his geeky side by giving a Vulcan salute with Star Trek legend Nichelle Nichols during a private meeting at the White House.

Obama gives Vulcan salute in snap

Nichols, who played Lieutenant Uhura in the original 1960s TV hit, was invited to meet the American leader at his Washington, DC residence in February while she was in town for an appearance at a NASA convention.

Earlier this week she uploaded a snap of her posing with the president during a meeting in the Oval Office to show fans the politician smiling and giving the camera the hand salute made famous by Spock on the show.

She writes: "So many of you have said such sweet things about my picture w/ Pres Obama taken at the White House. So glad that I could share it with you.

"How did the pic come about? Was in town for NASA event, wasn't sure White House was going to happen. Last moment it came together... My White House visit was not for an official event. I was honoured to be granted an opportunity to meet President Obama."
