Puffin Rock will follow the adventures of a family of puffins living on a wild Irish island, with Pip, an adventure-loving young puffling, and the hero of the show, exploring the island with her little brother Baba
The series will be broadcast in 2014 by Nick Jr. in the UK and RTÉjr in Ireland and will feature 39 seven-minute episodes.
As narrator, Chris O'Dowd will provide amusing observations alongside interesting facts about the wildlife on the island featured in the series.
"I love the whole idea behind Puffin Rock and the style of the artwork," he said.
"I can't wait to be involved in it, but then I do love anything with Puffins."
Derry-based media company Dog Ears will be setting up a new studio in city to produce some of the animation of the new series, as well as providing the scripts, voices and music recording.
Editorial Director, Laura Campbell, said: "It's brilliant to be able to announce more good news from the UK City of Culture and we look forward to showcasing the talent that exists in the city.
"The Dog Ears team is delighted to have Nick Jr. and RTÉjr on board for Puffin Rock.
