Former rugby star Gareth Thomas has missed out on a place in this year's Dancing on Ice final because he was too ill during Sunday night's programme.

Gymnast Beth Tweddle, boxer Luke Campbell and Eastenders actor Matt Lapinskas were automatically put through to next week's showdown after Gareth was not well enough to skate again following his first routine.

"Tonight's viewer vote has been cancelled. If you have voted, please check back here tomorrow for details on how to claim a refund," show bosses said in a statement to UTV.

Gareth was unable to perform the required flying routine which had left him suffering from severe motion sickness during rehearsals.

"I don't like heights and I certainly don't like spinning!" declared Gareth as he began his harness training.

Despite feeling sick, the contestant managed to take on an inspiring routine to Coldplay's Viva La Vida with professional partner Robin Johnstone during the live show, scoring 33.5 out of 40.

He left the stage unable to talk after winning praise from judge Ashley Roberts who applauded his "transformation" during the course of the show.

Later a doctor warned him he was too unwell to carry on.

Earlier this week, mentor Jayne Torvill admitted: "I think that's the first time I've seen anyone be physically sick after a spin."

Meanwhile, Matt and his partner Brianne Delcourt topped the leaderboard.

The favourites danced to Straighten up and Fly Right by Robbie Williams, before skating to Michael Jackson's Bad.

Their last dance brought a full top marks from Jason Gardiner, who said: "We really needed that tonight - that was a semi-final performance and had everything in it."

It has to be said with Gareth not being able to complete the needed flying part of the competition he had to be out.If the voters were allowed to keep him in it would have been unfair to the others who completed that section of the competition. He must have known this was coming up. Jason is nasty to Beth and Luke they deserve to be there in the final. And pussy cat doll person is so full of herself.

The way in which ITV has handled the whole Gareth incident is an absolute disgrace. The only reason Gareth was unable to compete properly tonight was because of the insistence on "flying" being part of the competition. Even with that, Programme bosses should have delayed the skate off until next week to allow Gareth time to recover and have a fair chance to rake his rightful place in the final. A totally unfair debacle.
