More than a quarter of a million people tuned in to UTV to watch the first instalment of James Nesbitt's Ireland, making it the most watched programme in Northern Ireland at the time.

The opening episode, aired on Monday night in the 8pm slot, saw the Hobbit star travel to the magical South West of Ireland to take in sights including Dingle and Blarney Castle.

"This stretch of coast was once cited as the most beautiful place on earth by National Geographic," James said of his stunning location.

And at its peak, 262,000 people tuned in to share James's fresh perspective on iconic landmarks.

The water might be a bit chilly, the sun may not always be shining, but the warmth of the Irish people will give you just as good a time.

James Nesbitt

"James Nesbitt is one of our biggest stars and this new series got off to a fantastic start last night," Michael Wilson, Managing Director, UTV Television said.

"Attracting an average audience share of 32%, it was well ahead of the ITV network average of 18% and beat EastEnders on BBC NI - which had an average share of 30%."

He added: "In the next programme, James spends some time in County Clare with one of Ireland's top surfers, visits a family smokery in Connemara, and travels to County Cork to try a spot of salmon fishing."

Watch the second episode of the eight-part series on UTV next Monday 25 March at 8pm - or catch up with the first episode on the UTV Player.
