Pun-loving local comedian Sean Hegarty came second in a UK comedy competition this week, with his Miley Cyrus themed play on words proving particularly popular.

On Thursday, Hegarty made it to the final of the UK Pun Championship at the Dave Leicester Comedy Festival, hosted by TV personality Lee Nelson.

The deadpan Lurgan-born stand-up came up with one-liners including- "My computer's got a Miley Virus. It's stopped twerking."

When Hegarty first used the pun on Twitter, he racked up almost 2,000 retweets and 700 favourites.

"I got over to the Leicester Comedy festival and it was just an amazing opportunity to perform with other one-liner comedians," he told UTV.

"Next thing I know I was in the final. It was an unbelievable experience."

Although the London-based comic Darren Walsh was crowned champion, Hegarty's witty performance earned him a runner up spot.

Walsh pipped him to the post with belters such as: "'I felt terrible this morning. I woke up with a pound coin up my backside. I must have been trollied last night."
