The Coleraine man was in Belfast on Friday for the launch of this year's Cinemagic Film and Television festival, which aims to help young people find out more about the film industry.

"They provide an incredible platform for kids from all backgrounds here to get involved in television and film and to be motivated and educated and inspired to integrate with each other," said Mr Nesbitt.

"I think there's never been a better time for young filmmakers, because of course there are many different stories to be told."

The 47-year-old is just one of the well-known faces taking part in this year's festival, with Gavin and Stacey actor Larry Lamb and film critic Mark Kermode among those discussing how they found their place in film and television.

And there will also be events with those behind the scenes, from set or costume designers to producers and directors giving an inside view.

For so long there was only one real story that film told in this country, but now, as the place continues to emerge from conflict, there's so much more for people to say.

"What something like Cinemagic offers is an opportunity for kids to get involved," added Nesbitt.

"They will get so much from it, and then we can learn from them in the future. This gives them the opportunity to understand how hard the work is but also how enjoyable and rewarding it is."

While the Cold Feet star was grilled on how he became an award-winning actor, chat also focused on his latest film, The Hobbit. Nesbitt plays a dwarf in Peter Jackson's blockbuster due out in December.

"It was amazing, it was a great experienced and a privilege to be involved.

"I'm anticipating as much as anyone also because I've not seen it yet. It was not like most things I'm involved in," he explained.

"I think along with everyone else I can't wait to see it."
