Foreigner star Mick Jones put out a public radio plea on Monday in a bid to reach his son in Long Island, New York as superstorm Sandy battered America's East Coast.

Mick Jones' plea to storm stricken son

The rocker could not reach Alexander Dexter-Jones as severe rain and winds brought chaos to states including New York, New Jersey and North Carolina.

He used his appearance on California's KLOS radio to get in contact with his son.

He told listeners: "I'm desperately trying to get a hold of him. I'm about to call the police department out there."

Jones explained he had told Alexander to listen to the interview, and called on him to "get the hell out of that low ground and get to high ground, please."

The impassioned plea worked - Jones' son contacted the star to reveal he was safe and had taken shelter from the storm.
