Mayall suffered an 'acute cardiac event'

Comedian and actor Rik Mayall suffered "an acute cardiac event" after returning from a morning run, his wife has said.

Barbara Mayall said: "We now know that our darling Rik suffered an 'acute cardiac event' at our home around midday on June 9th."He had just returned from his usual run and many people had seen him that morning."Mrs Mayall said her family had received "thousands and thousands of messages of condolence" from around the world.She added: "We always knew that Rik was well loved but we are all overwhelmed by so many joining us in our grief."Mrs Mayall thanked the press "for their discretion" and "all the wonderful coverage", adding: "It would have made him very happy."She concluded: "I am sure that you all know Rik's response would be something along the lines of..."well thanks very much all of f*** off!!"'Earlier, West London Coroner's Court said a post-mortem examination into the cause of death had proven "inconclusive" and more tests would have to be carried out.Mayall died earlier this week at his London home. He was 56.The star shot to fame playing Rick in television series The Young Ones, alongside long-time collaborator and friend Adrian Edmondson.His career included appearances in popular television shows Blackadder, Bottom and The New Statesman.Meanwhile, Mayall could top the charts less than a week after his death after an online campaign by fans sent sales of his failed football song, Noble England, rocketing.The track, which he recorded for the 2010 World Cup when it failed to chart, jumped 27 places overnight according to data from the Official Charts Company.It is now just outside the top 10 at number 11.Official Charts Company chief executive, Martin Talbot, said: "Rik Mayall's death this week was a shock to a whole generation of comedy fans - and their reaction in pushing his 2010 single is a reflection of how much he was loved."In turn, his new hit also underlines how the Official Singles Chart remains a modern day barometer of public opinion."Rik Mayall: Reactions
