Episodes sees the actor as the star of an American version of a hit UK show - and follows his dealings with the British writer-producers, played by Stephen Mangan and Tamsin Greig .

But what led him to take on such an unusual role?

Joined by Mangan in the This Morning studio, he told Phillip Schofield and Christine Bleakley: "Joey had ended and it was about five or six years, I wasn't really doing anything but being a dad and trying to reassemble my normal life.

"But then (Episodes creators) David Crane and Jeffery Klarik called me and said they had an idea."

Le Blanc had previously worked with Crane on Friends and was keen to work with him again.

"We got together for lunch and usually people have a pilot idea, but they pitched me the whole first season with nothing written on paper - just off the top of their heads.

"It was a long lunch," he joked.

"And I said: "That sounds awesome, I'm in" and my only reservation was ...playing myself...that was a little strange I don't know if I'm comfortable with that.

"And they said that it wasn't a documentary, it's a scripted character and if there was anything I didn't like they won't use."

Le Blanc said he eased into the role as for him he was simply playing another character.

"It's kind of loosely based on me, but it's basically the public's perception of a celebrity.

"Quite often I'm the brunt of the joke and they really take a lot of shots at me. But I don't look at it as they are taking shots at me than they are taking shots at that character in the show.

"To me, I have to look at it as a fictitious character.

And the actor admitted he may have had other motives in accepting the part...

"The idea to work with David again and Jeffery this time, I was like: "Oh God, if I don't say yes they'll go to (David) Schwimmer!"

"And I couldn't let him have it."
