US actor Eli Wallach, who starred in films including The Magnificent Seven and The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, has died aged 98.

The actor's career spanned over six decades in Hollywood after working in theatre for ten years.

He was best known for appearing in classic westerns, which also included How the West Was Won and The Misfits.

He also portrayed a mafia don in The Godfather Part III.

Wallach's more recent roles included starring alongside Kate Winslet in the 2006 comedy The Holiday and an appearance in the 2010 film sequel Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps with Michael Douglas.

The actor was never nominated for an Academy Award throughout his 60 year movie career, but he was given an honorary Oscar in 2011.

Wallach's death was confirmed by his daughter Katherine on Tuesday.

The circumstances of his death have not been immediately released.
