It was confirmed at Derry City Council's AGM on Monday night.
Sinn Féin Councillor Elisha McCallion told UTV: "For a number of months there has been huge speculation in relation to a major concert or festival type event that will be held here in the city.
"I'm delighted to confirm that contracts have now been signed and that we will indeed have a huge concert in Ebrington Square in September this year.
"Now the finer detail of that, for example who will be playing, who the headline acts will be, is still in negotiation with MTV, but we hope to have the information released along with tickets in the next coming weeks."
Ms McCallion credited the huge success of the City of Culture year and BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend as a showcase for the city's ability to host major events.
"We endeavoured in Derry City Council to ensure that major concerts can be held in the city and indeed Ebrington was spied by MTV themselves and they made an approach to council in relation to holding events on the square," she continued.
"We are delighted, that as part of the legacy programme, that we can bring such an event back to the city and we hope that this may continue in the years to come."
The event follows on from the MTV European Music Awards which were held in Belfast in 2011 and featured a spectacular free concert by Snow Patrol at City Hall.
The following year MTV also held a special concert at Titanic slipways featuring artists including Pixie Lott and Katy B.
