Laura Carmichael, who plays unlucky-in-love Lady Edith, has been speaking to This Morning about the "very dark" start to the highly anticipated new series of the hit period drama.
While the Downton residents are still reeling from the tragic death of new father Matthew Crawley, London beckons for Edith as she continues with her newspaper column.
Finding life in the big city an escape, her transformation is undeniable.
"As a young woman going to London, she's seeing all the new fashions. There are things she'd wear in London that she wouldn't wear around the dinner table," Laura said of her character.
Poor Edith has always struggled in the shadow of her older sister Lady Mary and, in the wake of being jilted at the altar, had declared herself destined to be a spinster forever.
But, having caught the eye of newspaper editor Michael Gregson, is that really the case?
They're looking for happiness ...
Laura Carmichael and Charles Edwards, on Lady Edith and Michael
Both Laura and Charles Edwards, who plays Michael, are staying tight-lipped.
The pair will certainly have plenty of hurdles to overcome though, coming from very different worlds. He is a working, self-made man, while she is an aristocratic young lady.
More complicated though is the fact that Michael is married - with his wife being kept in an asylum.
As she is not considered of sound enough mind to allow him a divorce, he's left falling in love with Edith but trapped.
"He now has to try to find a way to extricate himself from his marriage, whether that be by divorce or other means," Charles explains.
"He has to find a way of doing that which might lead him abroad ..."
Catch the first episode of the new series of Downton Abbey on Sunday at 9pm on UTV.
