After a night that saw the remaining X Factor hopefuls take to the stage to duet with their mentors, it was Jahmene Douglas and James Arthur who made it through to the very last stage of the competition.

The first instalment of the X Factor final weekend opened with the return of acts including Rylan Clark, Union J, Lucy Spraggan and Melanie Masson for a big group performance.

But then it was quickly down to serious business, with Jahmene, James and Christopher Maloney each performing their first song of the night.

For Jahmene, it was Move On Up - drawing a Luther Vandross comparison from judge Louis Walsh and much praise from the others.

Christopher continued to go retro, singing What A Feeling - also to a positive reception from the judges and respect for the fact he had fought his way to a place in the final.

And for James, the song choice was Feelin' Good - prompting his mentor Nicole Scherzinger to brand him a "mahoosive talent".

It's a new dawn, it's a new day, it's a new life for YOU ...

Then it was time to bring out the big guns.

Jahmene was first to be joined on stage by Nicole, with the pair forced by technical issues to share a mic, but still belting out the Whitney Houston classic Greatest Love Of All.

Christopher was next up, dueting on Take That's Rule The World with his mentor Gary Barlow.

And then Nicole was back, this time accompanying James on Adele's Make You Feel My Love.

As the public cast their votes for their favourite act, viewers and the packed out Manchester Central Arena were treated to performances by Kelly Clarkson, Rita Ora and Kylie Minogue before it was time for the big reveal.

First to make it through to Sunday night's big final was Jahmene, with James close on his heels.

That left Christopher exiting the competition, declaring that he was still happy to have made it so far, and Nicole celebrating the success of not one, but two of her acts.

"The critique that I've had and the negative press and the lies in the press and all that...I'm the third finalist and it feels fantastic," Christopher said.

Tune in to UTV on Sunday night at 7.40pm to find out who wins X Factor 2012.

Well ... that was a whole load of drama-rama!

We had big songs, burning cars, falling over cameramen, Kylie ... Dunno about you lot, but we need to go have a little lie-down in a darkened room before tomorrow night!

Let us know what you made of the result and who you think will be the last man standing - Jahmene or James ...

We'll be back tomorrow night - make sure you join us! :)

:O

Did an over-excited cameraman just fall over? We think he did!

That excitement must be contagious - Nicole's going mad and Jahmene's spinning James in the air!

And so is ...

James!

Nicole's boys are both through to the final and she's trying to throttle Dermot in delight ... Put him down!

But it's farewell to the Maloney - he's headed back to his nan, bless him. Bye, Chris!

Kylie!

It's a very glam in gold Kylie with her reworked take on the hit Can't Get You Out Of My Head, complete with a light-up orchestra and what looked for a second like a stage invasion by some scowly-faced blokes ...

PS: We want to see her and Rihanna duet - just to prove they're not actually the same person!

James and Nicole!

They're getting their money's worth out of Nicole tonight - she's back to duet with James on Adele's Make You Feel My Love.

Another outfit change, but no mic problems this time - thankfully!

James says Nicole is the best mentor he could have wished for. Right now, we'd love it if Louis was his mentor ... ;)

Jahmene and Nicole!

The Pussycat Doll and the gospel singer - frankly, this could go either way ...

But Nicole lurves her little lambchop so she's not forcing Jahmene into a rendition of Don'cha or anything - they're doing Whitney's Greatest Love Of All.

Eek, technical problems - but they're just going share a mic, even though Nic's about half a foot taller ...Cute!

Nicole is NOT amused, but they both reckon they're blessed to have got to sing with each other.

Remember when Tulisa had blonde hair? Remember when Rylan had blonde hair? Remember all those fabulously terrible auditionees we loved having a giggle at?

It's time to reminisce to the sounds of Kelly Clarkson performing her hit Breakaway ...

Unique talent ...

Louis's getting all emotional at the prospect of the X Factor changing James's life, but Tulisa's still trying to out-do Mr Walsh in the praise stakes.

Not sure what Nicole will make her of her "oh maaa gaaawd" phoney American accent.

But Ms Scherzinger is just heaping praise on her act, telling him he's a mahoosive talent and it's a new dawn, it's a new day, it's a new life for him ... Hey, that sounds familiar ...

It's James Arthur ...

And he's upping the mean and moody factor with a little stroll backstage before taking to the stage for Feelin' Good - a Nina Simone track, also covered by acts like Muse ...

More dancers - or maybe the same ones really earning their money tonight - but no moves from James. Just angst, by the bucket load.

He says he's feeling good ... Guess we'll have to take him at his word!

The judges are going all positive on us - respecting Chris for his hard work and that he's still in the final.

Although Louis's "you're not going back to Liverpool" probably won't sound like the compliment it was intended to be ... How will he visit his nan?!

The Maloney ...

Christopher's had a busy week too - back at his nan's in Liverpool with Gary for tea and buns!

Now he's sticking to what he does best - retro hits like What A Feeling after climbing out of a stereo.

Lots of dancers, but not too many moves from the Maloney - just the dad-at-a-wedding shuffle really ...

Jahmene reminds Louis of Luther Vandross apparently. Oh Louis, we've missed your comparisons ...

Tulisa's hoping for big things for Jahmene and Gary's also feeling positive, despite not loving the song choice.

"My little Jahmazzle," Nicole declares, before demanding more love from Manchester and votes from everyone!
