The Formula 1 ace's girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger looked on in horror from the pits when the crash happened, and breathed a sigh of relief as her boyfriend walked away unscathed.

She later took to her Twitter account to declare: "We love and support you to the end babe... Lewis Hamilton."

Just hours later, Hamilton posted a message on his own page to assure fans he is fine following the smash and looking forward to his next race in Monza, Italy.

He writes: "Sometimes, bad days are there to remind us that we have good ones to look forward to. So here's to Monza! On to the next one..."

Hamilton's fellow Brit Jenson Button went on to win Sunday's race.
