The actor, who has appeared on Coronation Street for over 30 years, recently returned to the cobbles after being cleared of 12 child sex offences last year.
A jury found the 49-year-old not guilty of all charges at Manchester Crown Court in September.
But following his return to the programme, media reports have revealed the actor abused cocaine in the run-up to the four week trial.
An ITV spokeswoman said: "Coronation Street and Michael Le Vell have mutually agreed that he will take a break from the programme whilst he seeks professional help for personal issues."
During the much publicised trial, Le Vell's personal life was brought under the spotlight and it was revealed he was a heavy drinker who had cheated on his wife while she was undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer.
Le Vell is set to appear in the soap for about six weeks from late March in previously recorded episodes.
