Like a fish out of water, in this Friday's Lesser Spotted Ulster, Joe Mahon finds himself in the heart of the city for the first time.

He may have bid farewell to the countryside, but Joe still finds beauty and tranquillity in the form of a spot of fishing at Belfast's idyllic Waterworks.

Created in the 19th century to supply Belfast's growing population with clean water, the area is now being used as a haven of lake and parkland for the public to fish or escape the inner-city pressures.

As well as meeting some of the local people who tend to the running of the angling club, local historian John Gray tells Joe the incredible story of the war over the rights to the water on the site that erupted in violence.

Joe also discovers how the fish gain access to the Waterworks and learns about the existence of some very large pike, before receiving a fly-fishing lesson where he hooks a bigger catch than he bargained for.

Lesser Spotted Ulster is on Friday 15 August at 8pm on UTV.

i'm a coarse angler and brought 2 sons fishing there today.I had been at the waterworks years ago and thought i'd give the kids a treat.I bought 3 day tickets £21 and found that the water was now only for trout anglers [game only no coarse anglers] !! We got our refund then decided to have a walk around the waters edge ,not one trout angler to be seen ! the weeds were 20-30 feet wide impossible to catch a fish and bring it safely to the net. It's such a shame they have turned this water into a trout fishery as many a coarse angler has now been cast aside to look at this beautiful water way and not touch.Far too many of our water ways are being turned into members only waters [Willis lake]can't join until next year no day tickets until next year and today one man fishing it !
