Headliners Kasabian will get the star-studded Belsonic festival underway in Belfast on Tuesday, in front of what is expected to be one of the largest crowds ever seen at an outdoor music event in Northern Ireland.

Over 40,000 revellers are to attend the eight-day event at Custom House Square in the city.

Event organiser Phil Donaldson believes the roster of acts performing between Tuesday 17 August and Friday 20 August, and from Thursday 26 August to Sunday 29 August will be the best yet for the festival.

"Well we're very pleased, we've a world class line-up," he told UTV.

"We've got the likes of Kasabian, Paolo Nutini, Florence and the Machine, Stereophonics, Too Many DJs, Biffy Clyro, Lost Prophets and finishing with David Guetta, so we're very pleased with the line-up and huge support from local acts as well."

Now in its third year, Belsonic has become one the country's major summer music festivals.

Brit award-winning band Kasabian will perform on the opening night, building on their 2009 sell-out Belfast performance at St George's Market.

The 'Madchester' inspired act have become a favourite of the festival scene, perched in the headline spot of many of this year's biggest events - including Oxegen, V Festival and T in the Park.

They'll be supported by Northern Irish rockers Ash.

On Wednesday night Scottish singer/songwriter Paolo Nutini returns to Belfast after a successful appearance last year at the Waterfront Hall - such was the demand then, the gig was sold out eight months in advance.

He too will be joined by a full supporting bill, which is still to be confirmed.

It is hoped that the summer concerts will also provide a tourism boost for the city.

"I think that the cultural tourism part of the tourism business is ever increasing," Belfast Lord Mayor Pat Convery said.

"Here in Belfast we've see multiple numbers of tourists coming in to see the festivals that we have had over the summer - this one being the largest outdoor festival that we have in the city.

"I hope that we will see people form across Northern Ireland, Belfast and the tourists all coming here and enjoying the event."
