The Leicestershire band performed to thousands in Belfast's Custom House Square.
Billed as the city's biggest music event this summer, some of Europe's best-known names will perform over the course of the eight-day event.
Kasabian classics like Underdog wowed the crowd in the compact venue.
Vocalist Tom Meighan said: "Belfast you sound beautiful tonight."
Voted best British group at the Brit awards this year, the outfit, who are completing work on their fourth album, treated the crowd to a high-energy set.
Ash also performed and received a rapturous reception. The Downpatrick band have worked with U2 in the past and toured the US. They played at Glastonbury this year.
They formed in 1992 and the singles Girl From Mars and Oh Yeah helped cement their reputation.
However, in the last three years they have struggled to break into the top 40.
A record 40,000 people are expected to attend the festival.
Paul Weller, DJ David Guetta and Biffy Clyro are also lined up to entertain the crowds as well as Welsh band Stereophonics and highly rated local groups Cashier Number 9 and General Fiasco.
This is the third year of Belsonic and it has grown every time.
Previous headliners include Dizzee Rascal, the Zutons, the Flaming Lips and Duke Special.
