The X Factor infamous twins John and Edward Grimes were hot favourites to beat four other acts on RTÉ's The Late Late Show Eurosong Special on Friday night.

They secured the most public votes and regional jury votes with their new track 'Waterline'.

They said: "It's crazy. Oh my God, we are so excited.

"We did it last year, we're going back and we have so many fans all across Europe. It's going to be, like, we are back, return of the Jedward."

The duo said the loved "making Irish Eurovision history".

"We'd like to say a massive thank you to everyone who voted for the song tonight - we have the best fans in the world. We'd also like to thank our mentor Linda Martin for all her support and the song writers for writing such a Jepic song."

Waterline was penned by Nick Jarl and Sharon Vaughan, while mentor Linda Martin was 1992's Eurovision Song Contest winner.

She said of Jedward's winning track: "It has a very modern sound and I'm confident that it's the perfect song for Eurovision," describing it as "a fantastic European love song."

Last year the twins finished eighth in Düsseldorf with their song 'Lipstick', achieving the best result for Ireland in 11 years.

The 57th Eurovision Song Contest takes place in Baku, Azerbaijan in May.

LMAO The is a recession you know! I doubt very much that any country wants to host the Eurovision. What better way to ensure that than to put up talentless 'singers'. Thank you UTV that story made me laugh.
