Dornan was nominated for his role as serial killer Paul Spector in the Belfast-based crime series, which stars Gillian Anderson as Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson.

The show was also nominated in the Mini-Series category.

Among the big names competing for leading actor and actress are Dominic West and Helena Bonham Carter, who are recognised for their portrayal of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor in a drama based on the couple's tempestuous life together.

Ant and Dec got the nod for hosting Saturday Night Takeaway while the show itself was nominated in the entertainment category.

Coronation Street is nominated in the Soap and Continuing Drama category alongside Casualty, EastEnders and Holby City.

The British Academy Television Awards take place on Sunday 18 May.

Dornan's nomination comes after he picked up two gongs at the Irish Film & Television Awards in Dublin on Saturday.

The star of the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey film was named Best Leading Actor in a Television as well as Rising Star.

The Fall also collected the awards for Best Drama and best Original Score.

Jamie Dornan is about to become a superstar! Congrats, Jamie, on winning Best Leading Actor and Rising Star! at the IFTA awards. Can't wait to see you get your "sexy" on (No, wait!... When is it ever off?) in Fifty Shades. If you are feeling the "fame" now, wait until after the holidays this year when fans will be frothing at the mouth, anticipating seeing your handsome face on the big screen! Oh, my....you're in for the ride of your life! Best wishes to you and your beautiful family! Stay grounded!
