Rocker Jamie Archer left The X Factor after failing to win over judge Louis Walsh with his rendition of Queen's The Show Must Go On.
Jamie and Lloyd Daniels were in the bottom two after the public vote and faced the final sing-off.
Singing for his survival for a second time, Lloyd chose Paolo Nutini's Last Request.
After the judges' decision resulted in a tie it was left up to the public to make a final decision for the fourth week running.
Simon Cowell voted to send the Welsh teenager home but Cheryl Cole and Louis Walsh both wanted to eliminate Jamie.
This left Dannii Minogue with the deciding vote, before announcing her decision, she said: "We have got two pop stars in front of us. We are looking for a recording artist. It's about who sang the best. The act I'm sending home tonight is Lloyd."
Cowell looked shocked as it was announced that Jamie had earned the lowest number of viewer votes.
Commenting on UTV's X Factor forum, one user, Laura, wrote:
"Simon has now got the slap in the mouth he deserved last week for keeping the twins in when he could have got rid of them. Jamie should have stayed but it's Simon's own fault."
Saoirse agreed: "Simon had chance to get rid of the twins last week, but kept them for another week of out a tune warbling and lost Jamie who can actually sing."
Charlene wrote: "Sad that Jamie is gone but The X Factor just wasn't the right place for him", while Emma said: "Wrong result Jamie is way better than Lloyd."
The remaining seven acts kicked off the results show with a rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody with Queen legends Brian May and Roger Taylor in support.
Shakira sang her new single Did It Again, before the 12 X Factor finalists were reunited to perform their charity single, You Are Not Alone, which will help raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital.
