Can-Linn featuring Kasey Smith and their song Heartbeat failed to impress in their bid to qualify for the grand final in Denmark.

Ireland is the most successful country in the contest and has won on seven occasions.

The last time they failed to gain a place in the final was in 2009.

UK entry Molly Smitten-Downes will perform her self-written song Children of the Universe in Copenhagen on Saturday, with 120 million people expected to tune in.

The UK is one of the 'big five' nations who were guaranteed a spot due to their financial support.

Fans will be hoping she does better than recent entries after Bonnie Tyler managed a lowly 19th place last year and Engelbert Humperdinck was 25th out of 26 acts in 2012.

She may be in for a good chance, according to experts at the London College of Music, who have come up with a formula for the perfect Eurovision entry.

It found winning songs were no longer than three minutes and often have a three note hook on the chorus.

They produced the formula (3m + 3NCh) + SF + CC = W which is translated as (3 minutes long or less + 3 Note Chorus) + Sounds Familiar + Cheeky Charm = Win.

Austria's "bearded lady" aka drag artist Conchita Wurst made it through Thursday's semi-final with the song Rise Like a Phoenix.

Switzerland, Slovenia and Poland are among the other 10 countries that have made it into the final along with the host nation.
