The Devil Wears Prada star began dating Italian real estate developer Follieri in 2004 but their relationship fell apart four years later when he was arrested in 2008.
Follieri subsequently pleaded guilty to 14 counts of wire fraud, conspiracy and money laundering and he was sentenced to serve more than three years in prison for the crime.
The 33-year-old was released and deported to Italy in May and now he has broken his silence about the ordeal, insisting he and Hathaway, who is now engaged to actor and jewellery designer Adam Shulman, had hopes of spending the rest of their lives together - before he fell from grace.
He tells People magazine: "We were talking about marriage. I was very much in love with her."
