Singer George Michael has left hospital and is "well and resting" after he was admitted for treatment last Thursday, a spokeswoman has said.

Two ambulances attended the former Wham star's north London home at around 8am on Thursday after a concerned friend called emergency services.

Witnesses claim the ambulances left after four hours with Michael on board, though the cause of his illness remains unknown.

His spokeswoman said: "In response to newspaper reports, we can confirm George was admitted to hospital on May 22.

"He was discharged last weekend and is well and resting. He is very much looking forward to the release of his new single in July. Given the personal nature of this matter there will be no further comment."

The 50-year-old Faith singer has been hit with a series of health problems in recent years.

In 2011, he was hospitalised in Vienna, Austria with pneumonia and spent weeks in intensive care, and in May last year he sustained head injuries after falling from a moving car on a motorway.
